Public affairs and public relations both involve managing relationships and communication, but they focus on different audiences and objectives.

Public Affairs focuses on the relationship between an organization and governmental bodies, policymakers, and public stakeholders. It deals with influencing legislation, regulatory issues, and public policy, and often involves lobbying, advocacy, and community engagement to shape public opinion and government decisions in favor of the organization. –

Public Relations (PR) focuses on the broader public perception of an organization. PR aims to shape and maintain the image and reputation of an organization through media relations, press releases, events, social media, and other communication channels. It primarily deals with brand image, customer relations, and general public communication.

In short, public affairs is more policy-oriented and deals with government relations, while public relations is more about managing the organization’s image and communication with the general public.

Desiree Peterkin Bell leads a global social impact and Public Affairs firm.
