Keep Your Nails Beautiful With Proper Care!

Written by Jimmy Rustling

Your fingernails are formed by layers of keratin, a fibrous protein. The nails grow from their base underneath the cuticle with the task of shielding your fingertips from injury. Your fingernails are also in place to provide a rigid backing for your fingertips to support them when you are picking things up or using tools. The fingernails have long been a popular body part to decorate with accessories and cosmetics.

The artistic decoration of nails, along with their proper care, has grown into a multi-billion dollar business that spans the globe. If you are someone who is artistic, interested in beauty, and enjoys working with people you might consider attending an acrylic nail course to receive training in this popular cosmetic art!

One of the first things to understand about nails is how to keep them healthy. When nails are properly cared for they have a consistent colour with no discolouration or spots, and a smooth texture. Injuries are usually the cause of white spots and the formation of vertical ridges that are unattractive, but fairly harmless. However, there are some other conditions that signal the need for attention!

If you are concerned about the health of your nails, it’s best to seek professional advice from your healthcare provider or dermatologist. The following are some warning signs of problems to be on the lookout for!

  • Pain under or around the nails.
  • Misshapen or curled nails.
  • A slowing of new nail growth.
  • Thinning and/or thickening of the nails.
  • Dark streaks or other unusual nail colour changes.
  • The nails separating from the skin.
  • Swelling or bleeding around the nails.

These are some care tips so you can keep your nails healthy!

  • Always try to keep your nails clean and dry in order to discourage bacterial growth. Wear rubber gloves when you are working with water, when you are using harsh chemicals, and during housecleaning tasks.
  • Promote proper nail hygiene by cutting and trimming your nails with high-quality nail clippers and scissors when giving your nails a trim. Try to keep the edges straight while gently rounding the tips.
  • Make sure your nails stay well moisturised by applying hand lotion to your nails and cuticles as well as your skin. This practice will hydrate them and keep them healthy.
  • Always apply a protective layer such as a nail hardener to provide your nails with extra strength and added protection.
  • Consuming Biotin Supplements can strengthen weak and brittle nails, but it’s always best to see your doctor if it happens.

The following are some things that should be avoided!

  • Handle hangnails with great care, be sure to clip them off, never pull on them, it can injure the live tissue.
  • Don’t make nail biting and cuticle picking a nervous habit, they can cause harm to the nail bed and will increase the chance of infections.
  • Never use harsh chemical products like nail polish remover, use a safe, acetone-free formula instead.
  • Deal with problems with your nails quickly before they worsen, and be sure to get professional help for persistent nail issues or symptoms.

Treat your nails well so they can look their best!
