Breaking Down The Costs: What Influences Your Electric Bill?

Written by Jimmy Rustling

As electricity costs rise, many people are looking for ways to save money. While there are small things around the home that can help with lowering the cost, it is crucial to understand what goes into an electric bill and how it can influence the amount paid each month. By understanding the bill and breaking down the costs, it’s easier to find things to change that will have a much bigger impact on the overall bill.

The Plan and Provider

To understand the cost of your electricity, it’s important to know the type of plan and provider used. Many people will want to take a close look at the kWh rate for their plan, as they may be paying more than they would by switching to a new provider. It’s also important to know the type of plan, as some people will end up spending too much because the rate is fixed at a higher rate or it is a tiered rate and they use enough energy to reach the higher tiers. Knowing the average kWh rate and energy used can help consumers see if they’re overpaying for electricity on their current plan.

The Amount of Energy Used Per Month

Take the time to look through current and past bills to find the energy used per month in the home. It’s also possible to measure the power usage at the meter to get an accurate idea of how much energy is being used. Compare this to the plan to see if the home is using too much energy or if the amount of energy used has increased over time. If the amount has increased significantly in a few months with nothing new purchased, there could be an issue with the meter or the electrical system. Have an electrician take a look, as this could help reduce the energy used again to normal amounts.

When the Energy is Used

With some plans, it may be necessary to look at when the energy is used the most in the home. Time-of-use (TOU) plans will have higher rates during peak hours and lower rates during the off-peak hours. If more electricity is being used during peak hours, the consumer is going to pay more for their bill. With this type of plan, it’s possible to see significant savings on the bill by adjusting the time when the more energy-intensive appliances are used and reducing their use during peak times.

Other Fees or Charges

Don’t forget to take a look at other fees or charges on the bill to see what they are and how they compare to fees set by other providers. Even if the kWh rate is lower, if the fees are large enough, it might not make a difference on the bill. When it’s time to look for a new provider, look at their fees or charges to see if any have lower ones to help with saving money.

It is important to understand the electric bill to know what will cause the biggest changes when trying to save money. Take the time to check the electrical costs and to see if there may be better rates by switching to a new provider. This could make the biggest change in the energy costs of the home, as it may be possible to get on a plan that has lower rates or better deals.
