Decoding Digital Mental Health Services: What Are Your Options?

Written by Jimmy Rustling

Humanity has progressed by leaps and bounds in the 21st century. The world as we know it is constantly going through waves of technological change and innovation. Yet, some of the most fundamental problems facing human life remain unsolved. One of the starkest issues among those is that of mental health.

Even in this day and age, around half of the people battling mental health issues receive no treatment at all. This is even more baffling when we observe trends of falling internet prices and rising smartphone ownership. Surely, it would be easier for people to seek out support in an online world free of social stigma and judgment?

Turns out that awareness about digital mental health services is lower than expected. There are many plausible factors behind this phenomenon. Hesitancy in sharing private information in an online space could be a major factor. Limited integration in clinical practice could be another. However, the main reason is most likely ignorance about the effectiveness of using digital means for mental health services. People can often be dismissive, but digital options have proven to be quite effective

What Are The Advantages of Using Digital Health Services?

Online options can feel like a breeze. One of the biggest hurdles to accessing mental health support is the sheer effort required in getting an appointment and going to the therapist. Online sessions are less cumbersome as they are just a few clicks away. The added incentive of going anonymous and laying their deepest fears and anxieties bare has also turned out to be a game-changer for certain individuals. There are no geographic constraints or barriers. A person from a remote part of the world could gain access to professionals from New York. Finally, affordability also plays a key role. Cost can be a big barrier for certain individuals, but digital services have turned out to be relatively light on the wallet.

What Are The Options For Digital Mental Health Services?

1. Mobile Apps

Mobile apps are perhaps the most popular mode of accessing such services digitally. While apps are useful, they shouldn’t replace consulting licensed mental health professionals qualified through an online Master’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling and similar degrees. Plenty of different types of apps on the market offer a wide spectrum of services. Meditation and mindfulness apps like Headspace offer a compelling way to calm the mind and soothe the senses. Mood tracking apps like Daylio simplify the process of tracking a user’s mood and emotions.

Apps that apply the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) have also emerged. The core purpose of such apps is to challenge unhelpful thoughts and behavior by teaching users how to reframe negative thoughts and emotions and escape the endless loop of misery and despair. Last but not least are the numerous sleep support apps that help users improve sleep quality and consistency.

2. Online Therapy and Counseling

As the most popular digital health service, online therapy is a rapidly growing market. Estimated to grow at a mind-boggling CAGR of 53.9% between 2025 and 2029, this mode will continue to attract both practitioners and patients. Live video sessions might be the most used format, but it is not the only way of seeking out counseling online. Voice or phone-based therapy appeals to many. Many patients might even opt for group sessions digitally. Talking to a professional through text-based messaging might also be a feasible option for many. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this trend, making it more mainstream and acceptable.

3.  Peer Support Platform

These types of platforms offer moderated communities where users can share their experiences, offer support to each other, and build emotional connections. These communities can take any shape or form. They could be a group of recent mothers who are transitioning into a new phase of life, or even army veterans who are battling PTSD. Such platforms have features like online forums, group video chats, message boards, and anonymous support groups. They might even have a licensed mental health practitioner who is moderating the activities.

Technology has changed many aspects of human life. It was inevitable that mental health would find itself at the intersection of the internet and personal well-being. Mobile apps are providing different avenues to strengthen mental wellness. Online therapy provides accessibility and affordability to people all around the world. Peer support groups are helping people going through the same challenges and issues connect digitally.
