Rhinoplasty (commonly referred to as “nose job”) is an increasingly popular cosmetic procedure that can change the look and make you appear younger. Although its results can be impressive, you must allow time for recovery after such a major operation – pushing yourself too soon could have negative repercussions and cause additional discomfort down the road. So, can you do sport after rhinoplasty?
Answer: Absolutely if you follow the recommended guidelines. Specifically, contact sports and other strenuous exercise should be avoided for six weeks after surgery, until your nasal bones have fully recovered. When playing certain sports such as boxing or lacrosse it is also advisable to wear protective gear so be sure to discuss this matter with your surgeon first.
In the interim, there are a few things you can do to continue exercising without risking overexerting your new nose. Pilates is an excellent low impact cardio exercise which can strengthen your core without exerting undue strain on it; swimming should also be attempted but you should wait four weeks after having had surgery before swimming to allow enough time for its area of healing to take effect.
As part of your rehabilitation, it is advisable to choose low impact exercises which do not put too much strain on either your body or nose. As your strength increases, more challenging exercises may become more suitable; always listen to what your body tells you and don’t push too hard!
Once you’ve passed the six-week mark, most forms of exercise should be safe to resume; however, too vigorous an intensity could cause blood clots to form around your nose and lead to further swelling. When returning to high-intensity workouts such as HIIT classes or similar programs with weights used as resistance bands (HIIT or similar), make sure they use elastic bandages so as not to accidentally bump your nose!
Avoid sports that increase the risk of injury, like boxing or any sport where you might get hit in the nose.
