How to study effectively

Written by Jimmy Rustling

Whether you’re studying at university or trying to pass a qualification to further your career, you need to make the most of your time. This guide will teach you exactly how to study effectively.

Get organized

It may sound obvious, but you would be surprised by how many people fail to plan their study schedules. Identify your end goal and work backward from it. From the outside, this doesn’t look particularly tough – you need to complete a certain number of hours each week for x amount of weeks. However, breaking down each hour into achievable chunks is the real challenge.

Pay attention in class

Many students fail to sit up and take notice of the lectures. While it’s essential you read around your subject before class, make sure you attend each session. It’ll help you grasp what is being taught with ease, meaning there will be less work for you later on.

Get the right tech

Make sure you have everything at hand to ensure your study time runs smoothly. A laptop is a must, as well as access to the internet and relevant literature. You can often find great deals on computers for students, so you should be able to save some money.

Steer clear of distractions

We’re all guilty of using social media or checking our phones while we should be studying, but this really isn’t the best approach. Make a rule for yourself to switch off from these distractions when you’re working.

Make sure notes are complete

Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare your notes. It’s all too easy to take down information in class but fail to include the most important pieces of information when you actually need them. Before class, identify what is likely to be covered and write these points down. This way, it’ll be much easier to follow the lecture.

Ask questions if you don’t understand

Universities are often more than happy to answer any queries you might have. Plus, if you contact your professor outside of class, they can help ensure that you fully understand what is being taught.

Make a study schedule/plan

If you want to ace that test, you’re going to need to plan ahead. Identify when the exam is and how much time you have before it takes place. From there, map out exactly what you need to do daily in order to prepare. It might seem like extra work now, but it will pay off when you get that 4.0 grade.

Review notes from class every evening

You’ve just got home from another grueling day at university, but it’s not time to relax just yet. Spend half an hour each evening reviewing your notes for that day. Not only will this ensure you remember everything discussed, but you should also be able to peg any parts of the session you found particularly tricky.

Study in the same place every time

The more familiar you are with your surroundings, the easier it’ll be for you to study. Whether that’s at your desk or on your bed, just make sure you always go back to this spot when you need to hit the books.
