The war against ISIS has spread to the Internet — where the hacktivist group Anonymous has led an online onslaught against fanatical Muslim supporters, now including a dating website for members of the Islamic state.
Anonymous announced today that they had shut down the website wwww.ISISsingles.com, making it impossible to use. After the take down, now when an individual views the page it shows a screenshot of the previous site and simply says “ISIS Dating Website lol Tango Down”. Anonymous also included a humorous testimonial purportedly from a member of ISIS.
“I find perfect girl using this dating website. I was looking for woman who does not talk and will blow herself up if I command it. Very soon after joining dating website, I find great girl. After explosion, I then find other great girl! This site is the da bomb! Thank you ISISsingles.com!”
Paul Horner, a White House spokesman, told CNN he approves of the actions taken by Anonymous.
“I cannot speak for previous operations by the group Anonymous, but anything to dismantle ISIS online, is a positive thing.”
“Operation ISIS Social Continues,” Anonymous tweeted today, describing its most recent action in a YouTube video posted today. The group also listed hundreds of usernames, login information and Twitter accounts for members of the dating site on the public sharing website Pastebin.
The new YouTube video features a computer-generated voice speaking over the digitized image of a Guy Fawkes mask and a Matrix-like stream of numbers in the background. Beginning with the collective’s usual opening — “Greetings citizens of the world, we are Anonymous,” the video goes on to state, “We are Muslims, Christians, Jews….We are hackers, crackers, hacktivists, phishers, agents, spies or just the guy from next door.”
The video then addresses ISIS directly: “ISIS, we will hunt you, take down your sites, accounts, e-mails, and expose you….From now on, there is no safe place for you online, even your ridiculous dating websites. You don’t need to find relationships, you need to find places to run and hide….You will be treated like a virus, and we are the cure.”
After listing the usernames, login information and Twitter accounts for members of the dating site, the Pastebin post also identifies a dozen or more Facebook accounts the hacktivists say have been used to stay in contact with ISIS members in Iraq and Syria.
The Youtube video ends by saying, “ISIS, you will be treated like a virus, and we are the cure. We Own The Internet. We are Anonymous, We are Legion, We do not forgive, We do not forget, Expect us.”
