The Role of Digital Games in Modern Life: More Than Just Entertainment

Written by Jimmy Rustling

Digital games were once a form of entertainment. Now, they’re that and so much more. As playing games online has evolved, so too has the impact they’ve had on society.

Here, we take a look at where we are and how we got here.

What is digital gaming?

Digital games work much like traditional video games, but this online format means there’s no disc and the games must be downloaded to the device, whether that’s a console, tablet or smartphone. This makes switching from game to game easier as there’s no need to swap one disc for the next one and it’s fully loaded and ready to go.

Cultural significance

Digital games have been a medium for storytelling and artistic expression for a long time. Popular titles offer immersive narratives and complex characters, and the level of detail in the artwork is becoming increasingly advanced, in many cases enhancing the realism.

These games push the boundaries of interactive storytelling, not only providing entertainment but also often lead to wider discussions about the issues we face offline.

It’s not just new titles that are making headway. Classic games have also found new life. For instance, bingo has successfully transitioned online, engaging players across generations. This digital adaptation blends nostalgia with modern technology, ensuring the game’s enduring appeal.

Economic impact

The UK’s video games industry is a significant economic contributor. In 2023, the video games consumer market was valued at £7.82 billion, marking a 4.4% increase from the previous year. Plus, the industry contributed £3.68 billion to the UK’s GDP.

This, in turn, means there are likely to be more opportunities for employment within the sector. There’s a need for creative staff at video game studios and there are several video games companies based here in the UK that have introduced jobs in the sector.

Educational applications

Digital games also feature in educational settings. There are initiatives that use popular video games to teach complex computing concepts. The aim is to capture students’ imaginations and enhance their understanding. Digital games have the potential to enrich educational experiences.

Social interaction and community building

Online gaming has redefined social interaction. Individuals can form global communities and develop communication skills.

In addition, games provide inclusive spaces where players from diverse backgrounds can collaborate and compete. So, not only does this transcend geographical boundaries, but it puts everyone on an equal footing where being able to play the game is the only requirement.

Also, gaming communities often extend beyond the virtual world. Those who meet online have been known to organise events and gatherings. These interactions contribute to a sense of belonging and shared identity among players.
