What to Do When You’re Moving Across the Country

Written by Jimmy Rustling

Cross-country moves are major live events that can affect everything from your routines to your relationships. But it doesn’t have to be a nightmare if you plan accordingly. Follow a checklist and that would mean less stress, fewer surprises, and the freedom to enjoy your new home without worrying about what you may have missed.

Not sure where to start? Here are some pointers for creating a stress-free journey from start to finish.

  1. Check out the neighborhood

Moving without scouting out your new location in person can be a problem. Even a short visit (in person or virtually) can prevent regret and help you feel confident in your choice. For example, you might not like the vibe you get from the neighborhood and local shops. Photos can be deceiving.

If you can take a short trip, spend some time in local parks, coffee shops, and stores to get a feel for the area. Ask locals about things you find important, like schools, noise levels, and the community to learn things you won’t find online. For example, a lot of people dream of moving to Florida, but choose the wrong location. Not every area is ideal. The best places to relocate in Florida are spots like Casa Marti that are located in beautiful, historically-rich neighborhoods close to popular beaches.

If you’ll be working a job in person, don’t forget to check out commute times. Some cities don’t have the proper infrastructure to support a rapidly expanding population, and you’ll want to know if your daily commute to work is going to be a sprint or a marathon.

  1. Research moving costs

Moving across the country isn’t cheap. That’s why it’s critical to know what all of your options are so you can make the right choice, whether you go for full-service movers, a truck rental, or a container service.

Estimate your budget

The average cross-country move costs between $2,000-$10,000, depending on distance, how much stuff you’re moving, and the type of service you choose. If you have a specific budget you can’t exceed, keep that in mind when choosing your service type because how you move will take the majority of your moving budget.

Compare service types

Full-service cross-country movers have the highest fees. Container services are slightly cheaper, and renting a truck is the cheapest option. If your only concern is budget, it’s critical to research all of your options because prices can vary greatly between companies.

For example, if you’re moving from New York City to Florida, a PODS container can cost between $2,475 and $4,294 depending on your destination city, while full-service movers can cost between $2,765 and $6,998. Some companies charge by weight, and you can expect to pay even more.

Renting and driving a truck on your own, including fuel, is much cheaper with an average cost between $924 and $2,021. However, if you rent a truck, in addition to driving more than 1,000 miles, you’ll have to load and unload everything yourself.

If cost isn’t a factor, consider the pros and cons of each option. For instance, full-service movers will make your entire experience hassle-free and they’ll even disassemble and reassemble your furniture. Container services are still convenient, but you’ll need to do the heavy lifting. Driving a truck across the country can take days or weeks if you’re not used to driving for long periods of time or don’t have anyone with you to share the driving.

Factor in seasonality

Moving in the summer will cost more because moving services are in high demand at this time. However, if you move in late fall or winter, you could save hundreds –  if not thousands – of dollars. In addition to the cost of moving, you might find better deals on a new home during the winter since fewer people move during the cold months. Often, landlords offer good deals in winter to keep their units rented, and home sellers offer discounts to attract more buyers so their home doesn’t sit on the market for too long.

Pack strategically

Moving is more efficient when you declutter first. Once you eliminate as much stuff as possible through donations, dump runs, and sales, you’ll have far fewer items to pack and unpack.

If you’re short on space or don’t want to deal with moving big, heavy items (like furniture), consider getting rid of those things and buying something new when you get to your destination.

Plan and strategize your move

Cross-country moves are complex, but they don’t have to be chaotic. With the right strategy and moving services, you’ll transition into your new home with ease.

Whether you’re relocating for a new job, a lifestyle change, or a fresh start, smart planning will help you get there without losing your mind.
