Why Hiring an HVAC Pro Beats DIY Every Time

Written by Jimmy Rustling

When your heater or air conditioner starts acting up, it’s tempting to try to save money by doing your own repairs. After all, you can find a video tutorial for just about any issue on YouTube. But HVAC systems are more complex than they seem. Whether it’s the delicate wiring of pressurized refrigerant, one wrong move can turn a minor issue into a costly disaster. The truth is that professional HVAC service protects your entire system and your safety, while DIY repairs are risky.

If you’re thinking about experimenting to fix a problem, here are all the reasons to call a pro instead.

  1. The manufacturer’s directions matter

Anytime you’re working on an HVAC system, the manufacturer’s instructions matter. This applies to the unit as well as anything you use to clean it. Most DIY situations don’t involve even a glance at the manufacturer’s directions, and it’s unlikely that you’ll try hard to find them online. This can be a big problem, especially when you’re cleaning intricate parts like microchannel coils. For example, you’ll need to use the right type of coil cleaner to avoid damage. It’s equally important to use low-pressure water to rinse the cleaner off so you don’t bend the delicate coil fins.

Another more serious mistake DIYers make is overcharging the HVAC unit with too much refrigerant. It’s not like your car’s gas tank that needs gas added frequently. The refrigerant is in a closed system and if the level decreases, it’s because there’s a leak. Adding too much refrigerant will change the pressure and cause a drop in performance. It can also push the cold liquid back into the compressor and burn it out.

A professional HVAC technician will know exactly how to spot a leak (or any other issue) and make recommendations for a repair or replacement in alignment with the manufacturer’s directions.

  1. HVAC systems are specialized

While you might be able to get away with learning how to replace your hardwood floor on YouTube, HVAC system repair requires specialized training and tools. These systems are designed with electrical, mechanical, and pressurized fluid components. A single error can cause a cascade of problems across the whole system.

Having a professional work on your HVAC system will ensure it runs smoothly for years. If you work on it yourself, you risk shortening its lifespan significantly. The complexity of these systems makes it well worth the cost of hiring a licensed, trained professional.

On top of all that, many repairs involve handling refrigerant, which requires EPA certification. Mishandling refrigerant can expose you to environmental liability and fines. Plus, HVAC techs have access to diagnostic tools most homeowners don’t have, like gauges to test refrigerant pressure and measure airflow. If you don’t have these tools, any DIY approach will fall short.

  1. Your safety is at risk

It’s easy to brush aside safety risks, but the dangers are real with HVAC systems. A simple wiring mistake can cause shock, electrocution, or fire. It’s equally dangerous to handle refrigerant. Exposure can cause burns and respiratory problems. Worse, working on the heat portion of your system can cause carbon monoxide leaks, which can be deadly. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that over 400 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning. A professional technician can mitigate these risks.

  1. DIY repairs are more costly

It may look like you’re saving some money by repairing your HVAC system yourself, but it will likely turn into a bigger expense. DIYers frequently miss the root cause of a problem and fix symptoms instead. In time, the same problem resurfaces and sometimes it’s worse. Sometimes a bad DIY repair can ruin the motor or compressor and those parts cost thousands to replace.

You also need to consider your warranty. Many, if not all, manufacturers require licensed service pros to work on the unit and any self-repair attempts will void the warranty.

  1. Peace of mind is priceless

The comfort and peace you’ll get from knowing your system was repaired correctly can’t be measured in dollars. A pro will make sure your system will heat and cool as you expect it to without any surprises when you need it most. And you’ll get a warranty on parts and labor so you don’t have to worry about anything.

DIY and HVAC don’t mix

DIY repairs have their place around the house, but HVAC isn’t included in that list. The risks are too high and the potential costs are too steep. By hiring a licensed technician, you’ll protect your financial investment, stay safe, and maintain your warranty. Quality service costs money but compared to the alternative, it’s worth every penny.
