Independent Living: Navigating Your New Chapter in Life

Written by Jimmy Rustling

Moving into an independent living facility can be an opportunity to start new, to get the help that’s needed while still focusing on what’s enjoyable, and to escape from having to care for an entire home alone. When it is time to move, there is a lot that can be done to make the move easier for everyone and to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Decide if Now is the Right Time to Move

Perhaps the hardest decision is whether or not it’s time to move into one of the local independent living communities. This can be hard because no one wants to leave the home they’ve lived in for many years and it can be difficult to acknowledge that extra help is needed. However, it is important to think about the benefits offered by independent living and what can be gained from moving to somewhere that offers more help with daily tasks and care.

Start Preparing to Downsize Belongings

It’s a good idea to start working on downsizing belongings before the move to avoid having to make rush decisions. Take the time to think about what is needed and what can be given to others. Get rid of anything that may not be needed anymore or that isn’t useful. Items that family members may not need but that are still in good condition can be donated to give to someone else who might need them. Think about who might like some of the belongings or where they should go so they can be used and loved by someone else. This process can take some time, so start it as early as possible.

Organize for the Moving Day

It is important to get everything organized for moving day. Take the time to box up everything that will be moved to the new home and label the boxes so they can be easily unpacked after arriving. Make sure there is a box for the things that are needed the most so they can be easily found before everything is unpacked. Prepare a file with any necessary documents or important papers to make sure they don’t get lost and make final arrangements for the home so everything is ready as soon as it is time to move.

Work on Creindependent living communitiesating New Routines

After moving in, it’s time to start creating new routines to help get settled in. Changes are often necessary during a move, but once the person has time to think about the changes they need to make and what they’d like their new life to be like, they can start to create new routines to help them feel more comfortable and like they’re back to normal again. Routines can be anything from a new cleaning schedule to taking the time to sit at the window, watch everything that goes on outside, and sip a cup of coffee in the morning.

If you’re getting ready to move into independent living, it is a good idea to take your time and make the move as smooth as possible. Go through the steps here to make sure you’re moving into the right place and that you’re ready for the move. Once you’ve moved in, you can start creating new routines and get back to the things you enjoy.
