Due to its numerous health benefits, Cannabidiol (CBD) has gained popularity worldwide and is already a billion dollar market. It’s known as CBD and is one of the hundred cannabinoids found in Cannabis plants. These plants are widely grown in countries like China, Egypt, Finland, Canada, Australia, Spain, Sweden, India, Hungary, Netherlands, and many others.
Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is known for its psychoactive effects, CBD extracts derived from hemp plants do not have any intoxicating effects. They give its users several health benefits without making them feel “high.”
Let us look at how CBD works.
The human body is made of several systems like the digestive system, respiratory system, reproductive system, and the Endocannabinoid system is one of them.
It plays a vital role in the proper functioning of the central nervous system. Homeostasis is the most important operation of the Endocannabinoid system. It is the process of maintaining a perfectly balanced internal environment for the proper functioning of organs in spite of variations in the external factors.
It’s also involved in other vital processes like neurogenesis, homeostasis, handling emotional stress, immune function, metabolism, and many other behaviors which control the functioning of the human body.
The Endocannabinoid system has three major components-
- Cannabinoid Receptors
- And Metabolic enzymes
Endocannabinoids are the molecules which are responsible for activating the cannabinoid receptors- CB1 and CB2. The human body produces Endocannabinoids which are made of fat-like molecules. 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) and Anandamide are two such major Endocannabinoids produced in the body.
Cannabinoid Receptors are spread throughout the human body and continuously monitor the environmental conditions outside the cell. If any changes occur in these conditions, the cannabinoid receptors work towards nullifying them.
CB1 and CB2 are two such major cannabinoid receptors. CB1 receptors are commonly found in the central nervous system whereas CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral organs predominantly in the immune system associated cells. CBD attaches itself to these cannabinoid receptors and produces several benefits by mimicking the behavior of the endogenous cannabinoids.
CBD is non-addictive and safe to use. It’s available in many different forms such as
- CBD oil
- CBD lotion
